Two New Board Members Added

We are pleased to announce that Henry DeBoer and Jeffrey Roach have agreed to add their talents and energies to the work of Greyfriars Classical Academy by accepting appointments to the Board of Directors.

Mr. DeBoer and his wife, Herma, have been heavily involved in Christian education for many years. After moving to the area in 1998 from Canada, the DeBoers have seen five of their six children graduate from Christian school, and their sixth child is enrolled in GCA's 10th grade. Henry operates a landscape design and service company called DeSignia. He is a deacon at Matthews OPC.

Dr. Roach (Ph.D. in Applied Economics, Clemson University) is no stranger to returning Greyfriars' families, as both he and his wife, Erica, taught the inaugural 9th grade class last year. Since 2006, Jeff has been the Chief Economist at Horizon Investments, LLC, headquartered in Charlotte.  He is a deacon at Matthews OPC.

Joel Belz Headlines First Annual Fall Banquet

Greyfriars Classical Academy is pleased to announce that Joel Belz – the founder of WORLD Magazine and a longtime champion of Christian education – is set to speak at our first annual fall banquet on Thursday, November 11, 2010.

For Mr. Belz, Christian education is a family tradition: His father, a Presbyterian minister, founded Cono Christian School in Iowa in 1951. Mr. Belz grew up understanding how a Christian education helps shape a biblical worldview, and he applied that knowledge to the formation of WORLD – a biweekly, Christian news magazine with an international audience.

Since then, Mr. Belz – an elder in the Presbyterian Church in America – has been a keen supporter of Christian schools that help parents educate their children and prepare them for robust service in God’s kingdom. We are grateful that Mr. Belz is willing to share his years of wisdom and experience with the GCA family and the broader Charlotte community.

Greyfriars Classical Academy Begins Its 2nd Year!
Matthews, NC

Monday, August 23, 2010, marked the start of the 2010-2011 school year for twenty 9th and 10th grade students at Greyfriars Classical Academy (GCA).  New and returning students began classes and enjoyed their friendships with one other.  The day was capped by a Convocation service to celebrate what God is doing at GCA and to dedicate ourselves to Him as our second academic year got underway.

GCA is a new, Christian high school in Matthews, NC, offering a classical education rooted in a distinctly biblical worldview. The school aims to equip students with an excellent educational foundation that will help prepare them for fruitful service in God's kingdom.

Students meet for class three days a week in a university-model format.   Faculty members hold outstanding educational and professional credentials, and the curriculum is consistent with North Carolina standards and college preparatory requirements. Classes for 2010-2011 include: Literature & History, Latin I & II, Logic & Rhetoric, Aesthetics, Theology, Algebra I & II, and Biology & Chemistry.  [Click here for Class Schedule and Four-Year Curriculum]

Recognizing the crucial importance of affordability, GCA offers one of the lowest tuition rates of private, Christian schools in the area. Tuition costs for 2010-2011 are $3,200.

GCA operates under an independent board comprised of several Reformed, Presbyterian families in the Matthews area.

Classes meet in the facilities of Matthews Orthodox Presbyterian Church at 2701 Rice Road, Matthews, NC, 28105.

Enrollment is open to any Christian family willing to affirm a simple statement of faith. For more information, contact Headmaster John McGowan at headmaster@greyfriarsca.net or call 704-315-5774.
